The artist’s account book notes that the picture, simply referred to as Girls fishing, was sent on 13 September and returned on the 15th. A black and white illustration of the picture, then retitled Holiday Time, was also made – probably for illustration in Henry Blackburn’s Grosvenor Notes, but this was unused and remains unlocated. The Grosvenor Gallery Library (est. ) was a circulating library in London in the late 19th century. It was affiliated with the Grosvenor Gallery of art on Bond Street, later moving to South Molton Street. It offered subscribers current periodicals, new books, and a Ladies' Reading Room.
Burne-Jones associated this painting with a refrain from a Breton folk ballad: "Alas, I know a love song, / Sad or happy, each in turn."
